QUESTION:

I know in the past I have read that some of the metal enthusiasts in the group also like/have excavation or farm equipment. I believe Fitch has some, for example. I have run into the need for a small loader/tractor and have heard that someone is importing low hour Yanmars from japan. Yanmar makes the smaller John Deere tractors. Has anyone any experience with these compact 4x4 tractors? If there is an NG that is more focused on this sort of thing, kindly point me in that direction.

ANSWER:

Yanmar makes the smaller John Deere compact utility tractors - the
755/855/955 series (which has been supplanted now with 4xxx-series tractors). The JD's are not just green Yanmars. JD has a lot of input on the design. I also believe that sometime in the mid-1990's Yanmar began to ship kits of tractor parts to the USA, as earlier ones carried "Made in Japan" and later ones "Assembled in USA".
I personally own a Ford/New Holland 1520HST. This machine is directly comparable to the JD755. Made in Japan by a company called Shibura.
3-cyl diesel, about 20 PTO HP, hydrostatic transmission, 4 wheel drive. It has a loader rated for 800lb. I bought it used from my wife's boss who owns a nursery. It had 390 hours and I paid $9000.
You really can't go wrong with any of this class of machine; Kubota, JD, or New Holland. They are built very stout and with proper maintenance the life expectancy is in excess of 5000 hours. However, you should be careful with the "grey market" stuff that is built for sale in other countries then brought to the USA by third parties. While most major parts will be interchangeable between domestic and grey-market machines, there can be a lot of annoying little and not-so-little things that don't cross-reference. Sometimes it will be the same exact part but the part numbering scheme will be different. In these cases you need a sympathetic parts-counter guy or you'll go nuts.
You also ask for other references. I suppose the NG misc.rural would have plenty of folks with small tractors. Also, on the web, I highly recommend the Small Tractor FAQ:
