Home Depot Rental Auction- Jan 12, Boston (Burlington, MA)
QUESTION:Get on their mailing list, the web site doesn't seem to list all the small
stuff. There is a curious marketing trend, Thomas offers skid steers, etc.,
brand new at auctions, also Doolittle trailers ( a cheapo trailer) are
sometimes marketed unused at auctions. It might be a good marketing tool for
a small to midsized welding fabricator selling something like skid steer
attachments.
ANSWER: Watch yourself at a Lyon sale, especially if you've never bought from
them. Their usual MO is to have bought the whole deal beforehand and
sold off the prime stuff to their inside buyers. If one of their
regulars wants something you ain't buying it. Air bids abound with
Lyon too.
I've dealt in the past with Vilsmier (now Hunyady)
and Surplus Asset Sales. Both seemed to run a pretty straight show. Hunyady
does not allow any self bidding, SAS is a sealed bid sale, so there's no bid
fever generated. This particular Lyon sale has a lot of small equipment like
floor sanders, tampers, etc.. Was the stuff you're talking about related to
big ticket items or in general?
Lyon generally buys the whole deal in advance, and then auctions it
off piece by piece. They also truck in lots from other sales, and are
pretty good at working the bidders into a frenzy, it doesn't matter if
it's an earthmover or a sump pump. Just set your top price and don't
get caught up in the momentum.
Which is the good thing about sealed bid sales- some toys at SAS end of this
month inc a Hobart Handler and Miller gas powered welder-
