QUESTION:I need to set up a multicamera security video system for a large rural
property, with 4-6 cameras. Each camera needs to run off a car
battery, as does the monitor. Connections must be wireless.
Most of the time, the cameras will be looking at unmoving terrain and
nothing else. Ideally, the monitor should incorporate some sort of
logic circuitry that beeps when movement on any of the camera inputs
is detected.
Does such an animal as this system exist?
Expertise from genuinely knowledgable people is greatly appreciated;
guesses from nimrods less so.
ANSWER: About 10 years ago I worked for a couple of alarm companies. You can
certainly get low power cameras and monitor them with a small television (preferably LCD to minimize power consumption). I think you might look into
what Ham's are doing with slow scan TV to come up with your wireless video
link. Ultimately, the batteries will have to be recharged, this could be
done with solar panels as long as your equipment doesn't consume more watt
hours in a day than is produced by the solar panels.
Construction sites where heavy equipment is parked are often protected by
motion detectors. These may be microwave types or, even better, microwave
combined with passive infrared detection technology. The ones I saw were
made by a company called Microwave Systems, however their are other brands
such as C&K, Sentrol, and Napco. Find out who does security for heavy
equipment dealers lots in your area and they should be able to help. These
sensors could be linked to a remote annunciator panel via radios built by
Linear Technology for just this purpose. Again this sort of stuff is
available through local alarm companies, or you might also contact King
Alarm in New Jersey as they are a national alarm equipment dealer who may
be able to supply all this stuff including the CCTV gear. If you do buy
from these guys, give them my name and tell them I want my commission!
