QUESTION:I would be willing to bet that if this country slammed tha
vault |door shut that there would be no national debt in 2 years.
I'd bet you'd be wrong. Just like England could not survive without it's
vast empire the USA cannot survive without our vast empire. If you want comfort
and wealth and gadgets and cheap oil then you've got no other choice. However,
if you want independence and isolation be prepared for a hard, hard life.
ANSWER: We had a lower unemployment rate and a higher standard of living across the
board from right after the war, untill the mid 70's. During the mid
seventies, we lost our manufacturing base, ether it was moved off shore, or
bought out by foriegn manufactures. We are down to two auto manufactures in
the country, one major tire manufacturer, one heavy truck manufacturer, no
small electronics, no tv's, no textiles, no shoes. Our largest heavy
equipment manufacturer builds 80% of its product over seas, leases it for 25
operating hours so as to avoid import taxes, and then ships it here. We
assemble computers but manufacture less than 5% of the components. For all
the cheap foreign labor, prices have not dropped, but gone up, while the
spending power of the average American has dropped steadly. An economy built
on service industries, is a house of cards with its foundation sitting on
top a sandy beach.. There are three basic types of people in the world,
those that will aspire to better themselves, those that are happy to go with
the flow and maintain the "status quo", and those that want to drag everyone
down to their level as its easier than climbing out of the pit they live in.
Terrorists belong to the last group. And the more they see a benifit of any
kind from some place else coming into their sphere of influance, the more
they hate that source, as that source threatens their power .
