QUESTION:I've been searching around for a used backhoe so that I can get
some work done on the property. After reviving from a dead feint
over the $16,000+ price of a used ford 555, I started looking around
at other options and types of machines. I turned up one fellow who has
a 1974 Masey Furgeson 40 backhoe with some where between 6000 and 7000
hours of run time. Thie machine still works but is in need of some T.L.C.
There are several things I'ld like to find out. First, what's the parts
situation like? Would I have a hard time finding parts for such an old
machine? After 6K to 7K hours of operation what's the most likely, expensive
part that will break the soonest? And finally, the guy wants $8,500 for
the machine. Is this in the ball park of reason?
ANSWER: I wouls most definately stay away from any machine that has 6000-7000 hours on
it. Unless it was babied, a backhoe with that many hours is essentially worn
out. I would consider any machine that has less than 2500 hours. Plus, $8500 is
too much money for a machine with that many hours, if it had only 2000 hours,
it wouldn't be a bad buy.
