QUESTION:I have a choice of quotes from various places (in order of price):
Shinano Pneumatic (as opposed to some other brand called Shinano
Industrial?)
Ingersoll Rand
Snap On's off-brand "made to our specifications" Blue Point or whatever
it is called
Snap On (feed a starving inhabitant of the 3rd world for 2 years,
or buy yourself an air ratchet)
Can anyone comment on relative price/quality of these brands?
ANSWER: The only ones on your list that I've used are Ingersol Rand (IR) and Rockwell
(Rockwell is no longer making them). From what I've seen IR makes pretty good
tools.
No first hand data on any of the rest.
I have an air rachet. I've use it maybe 5 times in 20years. The most used air
wrench in my collection is a Rockwell 3/8" butterfly that has an accessory right
angle drive head for it. Wonderful for removing and installing front shocks on
things like Astro Vans.
Yes, the reachet will reach into smaller places but doesn't have nearly the
torque of a regular impact wrench.
What you plan to do with them will determine your choices. If I were buying
wrenches today I'd get a 1/2" wrench that will go to at least 250 lb-ft
tightening, and 350 lb-ft removing things, a 3/8" butterfly with removable right
angle head attachment, and an assortment of sockets - metric, american, deep,
regular, and some impact universal joints. Then if finances allowed I get a
3/4" pistol grip with sockets to match (for taking the wheels off the bigger
tractor), and finally, if I still had money left, I would get a rachet type. I
use the air tools for working on my pickup trucks, tractors, tractor
attachments, excavator, trailers, etc., mostly for disassembly. Not on my
machine tools.
