AMT/ERTL plastic construction equipment

QUESTION:

I recently saw that AMT/Ertl has two model kits available of construction and farm vehicles -- a John Deere tractor and a backhoe (also Deere, I think). In 1/24 scale, it seemed.

I was encouraged, as I've always loved these kind of trucks. I hoped that they have now released other vehicles like excavators or loaders, but their poor quality website doesn't mention theese kits at all -- just their smaller diecast toys.

Anyone know if they produce other styrene kits of construction equipment?

ANSWER:

What you saw were AMT/ERtl reissues (apparently limited to a "one-shot" run) of a pair of John Deere tractors (one farm tractor and the backhoe) that Ertl kitted back in 1974-75. This was 7-8 years before Ertl bought AMT.

Ertl also produced the International Harvester Payhauler Off-Road dump truck at that time, in addition to two Massey-Ferguson tractors, and a pair of IH tractors as well.

AMT, in their own right, issued a Caterpillar D8 bulldozer in 1972, which was reissued several times over the years. For 1972, AMT promised a Traxcavator Speeder Shovel/Backhoe, but it never materialized.

Apparently, the sales experience of all this sort of model kit was disappointing, as neither AMT, Ertl nor AMT/Ertl has ever done any further construction/ag related models.
