QUESTION:The excavator for my new home dug the hole 2 feet too deep.
The builder is going to use packed crushed gravel to raise the bottom
and will pour the footings on the crushed gravel.
I am concerned that this will cause subsequent construction problems as
well as the potential for future problems.
Where can I go for information?
ANSWER:
Fill the footing with crush stone. 57 or smaller. You will save concrete
and the stone will not require compaction. DO NOT USE FINES or CRUSH 'n RUN
type materials because they require compaction. This is an excellent method
to solve your problem. The only future problem would be if the soil was not
stable on the sides of your footing. But that would be the case with or
without the stone.
